How long does it usually take for a feminized plant to reach maturity?

A feminized cannabis plant reaches maturity within 2 to 3 months from the beginning of flowering. This period may vary depending on the type and genetics of the strain.

Autoflowering strains complete their maturity around 2 months after germination and the appearance of cotyledons.

Generally, feminized photoperiod-dependent strains grown outdoors reach maturity between 8 and 12 weeks after the start of flowering, depending on the specific strain aswell. Indica strains typically mature in about 8 to 10 weeks, while Sativa strains can take up to 12 weeks. Indica-Sativa hybrids usually fall somewhere in between these timelines.

What distinguishes photoperiod-dependent feminized seeds from autoflowering feminized seeds?

The key difference between photoperiod-dependent feminized seeds and autoflowering feminized seeds, lies in how the flowering stage is triggered. Photoperiod-dependent plants need a change in the light cycle (hours of light) to begin flowering, while autoflowering plants flower automatically regardless of the light cycle. For this reason, autoflowering strains are often called "automatic" since they bloom automatically, no matter the number of hours of light they are subjected to. 

What is the process for producing feminized seeds?

Various methods exist for producing feminized seeds, all of which aim to induce one of the parent plants (female) to produce pollen with XX chromosomes. This feminized pollen can then pollinate another female parent, generating seeds that will grow only female plants.

Here are some of the methods that can be used to obtain feminized seeds:

• Stress Application: Often referred to as rodelization, this was one of the first methods used for the production of feminized seeds and is the most eco-friendly method of all.
• Silver Thiosulfate (STS): This method involves spraying a solution of silver nitrate, sodium thiosulfate, and distilled water on the flowers of the plants from which the grower wants to collect the pollen, prompting male flower formation.
• Colloidal Silver: Applied in a similar way to STS, this method uses a colloidal silver solution to reverse the sex of the plant, resulting in male flowers that produce feminized pollen.
• Gibberellic Acid: This approach, that works in the same way as the colloidal silver use, relies on gibberellins—plant hormones that stimulate cellular growth.

What are the signs that a feminized seed has started to germinate?

If you are new to cannabis seeds, you will know germination has begun when the seed cracks open, revealing a small root, known as the radicle, emerging from the seed shells.

If the seed is planted in soil and out of view, you will know it has germinated once it starts breaking through the soil surface, showing the cotyledons and later the first pair of leaves.

Does the lunar phase affect the germination of feminized seeds? What is the ideal phase?

The lunar phase can indeed influence the germination of feminized seeds, with the ideal phase being the waxing crescent moon. However, it’s important to consider the timing carefully, as you may miss the season for outdoor growing if you choose to wait for the ideal lunar phase.
